Athlete Achievements and Contest Overview:
Eighty-two athletes competed on-site at 2SP Brewing Company for the 5th annual Beer Muscles competition. Rain held off for competitors to complete 5 events: keg toss, max weight keg over bar, basket deadlift, keg/duck/sled carry & drag medley, and arm-over-arm truck pull with the 2SP delivery vehicle!
Highlights included a 1st place finish in LW Novice by Katie Owen in her first ever competition. She sealed her win with an impressive 27 reps on the basket deadlift giving her a 7-point lead overall. We also saw LW175 Javon Quarles load a 320lbs keg (at a bodyweight of 173lbs) on his way to a 1st place finish. There was a close battle all day in MW231 where Mitchell Cady narrowly edged out Joe Turner in a countback to earn his bid to Nationals. In Men’s HW Open, Declan Patton came in at a bodyweight of just 235lbs – providing “a ‘normal size person’ reference for the audience” (his words) – and hung with the husky boys to secure a 2nd place finish. The Power Plant Team had a whopping 20 competitors, 12 of whom had podium finishes, the best turnout of the competition.
This year’s competition also served as a fundraiser for the Delaware County Special Olympics Powerlifting Team. Together we raised $1,300 for the team! This came from a combination of raffling off prizes from our generous sponsors, a 50/50 raffle, and donations from attendees. Coaches and members of the team had a blast at the competition, and everyone was stoked to help them with funding.
For the third time this year, promoters presented a “Spirit of Beer Muscles” award to the person who most exemplified the spirit of the competition: camaraderie, strength, sportsmanship, and fun. The group leaders chose MW Novice competitor Josh Russell, who brought positivity to the whole event, and even earned “cool points” (for what, we’re not exactly sure) from the other guys in his division. That’s what Beer Muscles is all about!
